BIOGRAPHY

Brazilian born violinist Rômulo Sprung began his studies on the violin at the age of nine, under the instruction of Suzuki pedagogue Shinobu Saito. At thirteen, he won his first national competition for young artists, the XVI Young Instrumentalists of Brazil Competition. He was also awarded at the Paulo Bosísio National Competition, a prestigious competition held in Brazil for violinists of all nationalities.

Rômulo has performed in some of the most prestigious halls in the U.S., Brazil and China; and played under the baton of renowned maestros such as Kurt Mazur, Manfred Honeck and Alondra de la Parra, among others. He also had the opportunity to perform in master classes for Shlomo Mintz, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Andres Cardenés, Miriam Fried and Shmuel Ashkenazi. Since his move to the United States, Rômulo has been playing as a freelancer and substitute in many professional regional orchestras, including an invitation to play in the Sunflower Music Festival Orchestra, where he performed concerts along with musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, and other top tier ensembles from the United States. Recently, he became a member of the Momento Viruosi, a chamber orchestra formed by musicians who are based in Europe, Asia and the U.S. The group went on a tour in Qingdao, China, to perform in the opening concert of the Sound of Phoenix Grand Theater.

In addition to performing, Rômulo holds a great passion for teaching, and has been doing it for over a decade. Currently based in Minneapolis, he is pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in violin performance at the University of Minnesota, studying with violin pedagogue Sally O’Reilly. Rômulo also holds degrees from Roosevelt University, Duquesne University, and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. He previously studied with Yuan-Qing Yu, Charles Stegeman, Fredi Gerling, and has had chamber music training with Richard Young, Lydia Artymiw and members of the Atrium Quartet.
